Yoga Nidra is a technique in which you learn to relax consciously. Many of us feel like we are relaxing when we sit in a comfy chair or have a beer after work but these are only really sensory diversions, distractions. Scientifically speaking, in order to truly relax, we must remain aware.
When we practice Yoga Nidra we are systematically inducing complete relaxation of the physical body as well as the mental and emotional self.
In Sanskrit the term Nidra means deep sleep, so Yoga Nidra can be translated as Yogic sleep. But we are not actually sleeping during the practice. While the physical body is put to sleep. the mind is kept awake putting us in a state between slumber and wakefulness. Once we turn our attention inward and disconnect from external stimuli we are able to completely relax.
The practice itself begins with a series of light exercise to rid the body of any tension or tightness. Once we are ready, we lay in Shavasana (also known as ‘Dead mans pose’) in which we make ourselves as comfortable as possible to lay motionless for the rest of the practice. Then all you have to do is let my voice guide you into ultimate relaxation.
It is said that half an hour of Yoga Nidra can give you as much rest as a full nights sleep!
I will be offering Yoga Nidra once a month dependent on demand, so if you would like to participate in a class, please let me know!
