Yin Yoga is a slow paced style of Yoga in which most of the postures are done either sitting or laying down. As we keep the muscles cold during Yin Yoga, we work on the connective tissues – tendons, fascia and ligaments – around and between the joints. Poses are held for an amount of time ranging from 45 seconds to 5 minutes.
Yin Yoga is a great complimentary practice for those who have an active lifestyle, do sports or practice more active forms of yoga. When we exercise frequently we strengthen but also shorten the muscles. Yin helps us to create more space and lengthen the muscles again.
Working on the connective tissues in this way increases circulation to the joints and increases flexibility.
Staying in postures for a longer period of time gives us time to dive deeper into the meditative aspect of Yoga, cultivating an inner silence and the skill of being patient.
I am currently teaching Yin Yoga twice a week at You Can Yoga (click on link for studio website).
Check the schedule to see when and where you can find me to practice some Yin Yoga together.
